How to get to Los Cabos Airport (SJD) without missing your flight

November 6, 2026 · KnowCabo

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) sits near San José del Cabo, and that's where the most common mistake comes from: assuming it's "close" from any hotel. It isn't. How early you should leave depends on where you're staying and the time of day.

Drive times from each area

These are normal-traffic drive times, plus what we recommend for when to leave based on your flight type:

From Drive Leave — international Leave — domestic
San José del Cabo 15–25 min 3 h 30 min before 2 h 30 min before
Tourist Corridor 25–40 min 4 h before 3 h before
Cabo San Lucas 40–55 min 4 h 30 min before 3 h 30 min before

From Cabo San Lucas it's about 30 miles (48 km) on Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular). Easy driving, but not short.

Where traffic backs up

If your flight is early, the problem flips: the road is clear, but whoever is driving you has to be ready ahead of time. Confirm the night before.

A simple rule so you don't get it wrong

  1. Take your flight time.
  2. Subtract the recommended time above for your area.
  3. If the drive falls between 3 pm and 6 pm, subtract another 30–45 minutes.

Example: an international flight at 7 pm from Cabo San Lucas. The baseline is 4 h 30 min before, which is 2:30 pm. Since you'd be driving right into rush hour, leave between 1:45 and 2:00 pm.

Terminals

The airport has two terminals in operation: Terminal 1 handles domestic flights and some international ones, and Terminal 2 is for international flights only. Check your airline's terminal before you leave; going to the wrong one costs time you don't have.
